Special report: 2008 Olympic Games
BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The president of DR Congo Olympic Committee expressed his hope here Monday that his athletes would achieve good results in the Beijing Olympics.
Jean Beya Wa Kabenga admitted that it would be difficult for DR Congo athletes to win their first-ever Olympic gold, but still hopes for the best from the quadrennial world sports gala.
"It's sports and only the best is winner," said Kabenga, "We didn't expect our athletes to make perfect results. But they qualified for the Olympiad and they will do their best to win."
"We trust them to make something for the weather in Beijing is just similar to what we have in Congo. It fits us."
Kabenga praised the organization of the Beijing Olympics.
"The organization job is so great and we have nothing to comment. We now are busy managing the team but I'm looking forward to spending sometime in Beijing after the Games."
DR Congo is sending five athletes to China to compete in track and field, judo, swimming and boxing.
DR Congo made its debut at the Olympics in 1968 as Congo Kinshasa. After an absence of 16 years, the nation returned to the Olympic family in 1984 as Zaire. Since the 2000 Sydney Games, it has been competing as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or DR Congo.
